  1. TV guy says:

Pass-through means that if you connect an HDMI source, the receiver will take care of the audio decoding and playback and will pass-through the video to HDMI out, so you can connect it to the TV.

But don’t expect any conversions, say from component or composite video input to HDMI video out.

Some high-end receivers do have upconverting HDMI video out.

  2. Ryan B says:

yes, some receivers, like the sony DG920 will upconvert composite and component signals.

  3. C says:

HDMI PASSTHROUGH means that the AVR will not use any portion of the HDMI signal, other than ‘pass it through’ to the HDMI output; you will have to use an additional output from the source for audio.

i.e. if you connect a DVD player via HDMI to the AVR with HDMI PASSTHROUGH, you must also connect the digital audio optical or coax cable too. The AVR will output the HDMI video. It will decode audio from the separate digital audio cable.

AVR’s that have HDMI REPEATER functions MAY have 1 or more features, such as decoding audio via the HDMI input, upconversion to HDMI, etc.

Research any model specific info before you buy, particularly user manuals if you can. Some brands such as Sony and Onkyo have a majority of their owner’s manual online via the support website.

Example: per onkyousa.com, the Onkyo TX-SR506 has HDMI passthrough*. The asterik points to a note on the page: “requires separate audio connections. TXSR576 and higher are equipped with HDMI REPEATERs.

NOTE: Yes, an HDMI cable can support audio and video simultaneously. However, it is up to the manufacturer’s to make use of that capability. It may be cheaper to make a AVR without HDMI decode circuitry (passthrough) than an AVR with HDMI decode circuits (repeater).

  4. BANG P says:

It means this receiver doesn’t support audio via HDMI, just pass video signal to TV. You have to connect audio cables from sources to receiver for sound.

  5. RankingSlackness says:

The posters who answered that it will not pass audio through HDMI are correct. Why manufacturers made these types of receivers is beyond me. They are completely worthless IMO.
